MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – For the first time in school history, the West Virginia University football team will begin the season ranked in the Top 10.
The AP poll released Saturday has the Mountaineers ranked 10th behind USC, Oklahoma, Georgia, LSU, Florida State, Miami, Texas, Michigan and Ohio State.
The highest the AP has ever ranked West Virginia to start the season was 11th in 1998. The Mountaineers were also preseason ranked in 1953 (#16), 1955 (#19), 1970 (#20), 1988 (#18), 1989 (#19), 1994 (#24), 1995 (#23) and 1998 (#11).
Previously, West Virginia was rated No. 11 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll.
West Virginia’s only opponent in the preseason AP Top 25 is No. 22 Maryland, which the Mountaineers face on Saturday, Sept. 18, at Mountaineer Field.
The Mountaineer Ticket Office is still accepting season-ticket orders by calling 1-800-WVU GAME. Fans can also purchase single-game tickets (excluding Maryland) on-line by logging onto WVUGAME.com.
West Virginia opens the 2004 campaign at home against East Carolina on Saturday, Sept. 4. Kickoff is set for 6 pm.
