MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- The Football Writers Association of America has announced the 2004 Bronko Nagurski Watch List, which is a compilation of the best defensive players in college football regardless of position. Jones, a junior, picked off four passes and returned one 49 yards for a touchdown against Boston College last season. The 5-foot-10, 190-pound, College Park, Ga., resident also accumulated 89 tackles, 14 pass breakups, six tackles for losses and two fumble recoveries. Jones is also a big-play performer on special teams, returning 33 kicks for 867 yards and an average of 26.3 yards per return.
Other Big East players listed are Syracuse’s Diamond Ferri, Rutgers’ Jarvis Johnson, Boston College’s Mathias Kiwanuka, Connecticut’s Maurice Lloyd and Temple’s Rian Wallace.
The winner of the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, presented by the FWAA and the Charlotte Touchdown Club, will be named on December 6 at a banquet in Charlotte, N.C.
The FWAA will select a defensive player of the week during the 2004 season. Top defensive performances around the country will be submitted by schools and conferences. An FWAA committee will select the winner from those nominees.
One player per school is listed below. All defensive players on the All-America Watch List are considered by the FWAA All-America Committee. Those players who win defensive player of the week awards and have not been previously listed also will be considered.
Jones joins Jeremy Hines and Dan Mozes as WVU players presently listed on preseason watch lists. Hines is a candidate for both the Outland Trophy and the Rimington Award while Mozes is also listed as a candidate for the Outland Trophy.
Single game tickets for the 2004 football season are now on sale and can be purchased by calling the Mountaineer Ticket Office toll-free at 1-800-WVU GAME or by logging onto WVUGAME.com. Season tickets are also still available for purchase.
