MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University junior Adam “Pac-Man” Jones is one of 29 preseason candidates for the Jim Thorpe Award, presented annually to the nation’s best defensive back.
The Thorpe Award is named in honor of one of history’s greatest all-around athletes, a man who excelled as a running back, passer and kicker on offense, but was also a terrific defender. Recognized in the Pro Football Hall of Fame as “The Legend”, Thorpe also played professional baseball and won Olympic gold medals in the decathlon and pentathlon.
Jones is coming off an impressive sophomore season in 2003, accumulating 85 total tackles to go with four interceptions, six tackles for losses and 14 pass breakups. Jones also was a threat returning punts and kicks, averaging 26.3 yards per kickoff return and returning 16 punts for 98 yards including a long return of 37 yards.
The Thorpe Watch List will be narrowed to 120 semifinalists the first Monday in November and then to three finalist the Monday before Thanksgiving. The winner will be announced on ESPN’s College Football Awards Show, telecast from Disney World on Dec. 9. The official presentation of the award will be in Oklahoma City, Okla., on Feb. 8.
