MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- West Virginia University and the BIG EAST have announced the Mountaineer women's basketball opponents for the 2004-05 season.
The 2004-05 slate features 14 home games, 12 away matchups and the annual meeting with Marshall in Charleston.
This season, each BIG EAST team plays five teams twice and six teams once. WVU will play repeat games against Boston College, Georgetown, Providence, Seton Hall and Villanova. WVU will play league road games at Notre Dame, Rutgers and Pitt and will host three-time defending national champion Connecticut, St. John's and Syracuse.
In non-conference action at the WVU Coliseum, the Mountaineers play host to UNC-Greensboro, Northwestern, Duquesne, St. Francis, Pa., and Coppin State. The Mountaineers will face Longwood in Charleston.
WVU hits the road to face non-conference foes East Carolina and Texas A&M Corpus-Christi and will face two opponents at the Florida International Thanksgiving tournament.
"We play several of the top teams in the conference twice this season and of course every game in the BIG EAST, regardless of the site, will be a battle," 2003-04 BIG EAST coach of the year Mike Carey says. "In non-conference action, we'll play a lot of opponents who should help us prepare for BIG EAST action. We will also, hopefully, be able to play a lot of our younger players and get them experience as we prepare for conference play."
In all, WVU will play seven teams that appeared in postseason play last year, six of which qualified for the NCAA Tournament.
The complete schedule with dates will be announced in September.
