MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University sophomore outfielder Stan Posluszny was taken by the Anaheim Angels in the 21st round of the major league draft Tuesday.
The Aliquippa, Pa., native was the 623rd overall player picked and joins WVU teammates Grant Psomas and Zac Cline, picked in the 15th round yesterday. Psomas was selected by the New York Mets and Cline was taken by the Philadelphia Phillies.
Posluszny, a 6-foot-3, 205-pounder, hit .322 with six home runs, 13 doubles and drove in 33 runs as a sophomore this season to earn all-Big East third team honors.
Last season, Posluszny hit .340 with five home runs and 31 RBI to be named Big East rookie of the year as well as making the all-Big East second team as a designated hitter. Posluszny is eligible for the draft because he redshirted his first season at WVU in 2002.
Posluszny becomes the 22nd West Virginia player (just the seventh position player) drafted under Coach Greg Van Zant’s watch. A total of 56 Mountaineer players have been selected since the draft was instituted in 1965.
The draft concludes today after 50 rounds.
