MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Nearly 700 athletes from all across West Virginia were in Morgantown this weekend for the 2004 West Virginia Special Olympics Summer Games, hosted by West Virginia University.
The theme for this year’s games was “Go the Distance.”
The official opening ceremonies took place Friday evening at the WVU Coliseum with athletes, volunteers and spectators celebrating the spirit of competition and a weekend of fun and friendship. Among those addressing the athletes Friday evening was West Virginia University standout men’s basketball player Patrick Beilein.
This year, some athletes took part in actual rounds of golf at Mountaineer Golf & Country Club. Kayaking competition will be held on Cheat Lake. Mylan Park Fields played host to unified softball. Other events included bocce, tennis, aquatics, track and field, cycling and wheelchair races.
Competition began Friday afternoon at venues throughout campus and continued through Sunday morning.
