MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Former West Virginia University outfielder Jake Serfass has signed a free agent contract with the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Fairless Hills, Pa., is a member of the Helena (Mont.) Brewers and has appeared in one game with one at bat. As of Thursday, Helena has played five games and has a 3-2 record. Helena plays in the rookie-level Pioneer League.
Serfass batted .302 with six home runs, 14 doubles and 25 RBI as a senior for the Mountaineers in 2004. His best season came in 2003 when he slugged 10 home runs and drove in 37 runs while batting .357.
Serfass joins drafted Mountaineers Zac Cline (Philadelphia) and Grant Psomas (New York Mets) who have recently joined the professional ranks.
Cline is pitching for the Batavia Muckdogs of the New York-Penn League where he has pitched two innings of scoreless relief and owns a 1-0 record.
Psomas is also playing in the New York-Penn League for the Brooklyn Cyclones and shows one hit in 14 at-bats for an .071 average. Psomas’ lone hit was a double.
Meanwhile, outfielder Stan Posluszny, drafted in the 21st round by the Anaheim Angels but has two years of college eligibility remaining, has yet to sign with the Angels and may return to school for his junior season.
