MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University’s Jessica Czaikowski was a late addition to the field at the 2004 NCAA Outdoor Championships to take place in Austin, Texas, June 9-12.
Czaikowski finished seventh in the 100-meter hurdles at last weekend’s NCAA East Regional Championships in Gainesville, Fla., with a time of 13.58, but was added to the NCAA field because first-place finisher Lashinda Demus of South Carolina and fifth-place finisher Monique Morgan of Villanova withdrew from the event.
That means Czaikowski moves up into the fifth slot from the East and becomes the 28th and final participant in the women’s 100-meter hurdles.
“Talk about moving up like a meteor,” said West Virginia University coach Jeff Huntoon. “Before ECACs she was ranked about 100th in the country and after ECACs she moved up to 72nd. After last weekend she moved up another 30 spots because of the huge PR she had. I’m really happy for her.”
The 5-foot-8 freshman from Tottenham, Ontario joins two other West Virginia qualifiers at nationals. Junior Jennifer Kemp is the 23rd-ranked participant in the 800-meter run and junior Tara Struyk is the 14th-ranked athlete in the 5,000. Both Kemp and Struyk are Edmonton, Alberta, natives.
This marks the second straight year Huntoon has sent three athletes to outdoor nationals and these three standouts represent eight total qualifiers during his three seasons at WVU.
