CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The team captain by football assistant coach Herb Hand captured the 2004 WVU Classic at Berry Hills Country Club in Charleston with an 11 under par 59 Thursday afternoon.
Also playing on Hand’s team were Steve Grimm, Jim Reed, Jack Cipoletti and Jeff Christian. The group made three birdies and eagled the 477-yard par five number four on the front nine, and birdied 10, 11, 13, 16, 17 and 18 to finish the back with a score of 28.
Coming in second place was the team captained by former Mountaineer coach Don Nehlen with a 10 under par 60. The group captained by Carl Bahneman also shot a 60, but came in third due to tie breakers.
A total of 21 teams made up the 22nd annual WVU Classic, which culminates the Mountaineer Athletic Club’s spring fundraising drive around the state. MAC executive director Whit Babcock estimates the Classic will net the WVU athletic department about $50,000.
Once again this year the WVU Classic was presented by Charter Communications.
