Cline, a Union City, Pa., native, was recently tabbed national and BIG EAST conference pitcher of the week for his efforts in a 5-1 victory over St. John's last Saturday. The southpaw was just four outs away from pitching his first career no-hitter. The junior allowed just two hits through seven innings with four strikeouts and two walks in tossing his league-leading seventh complete game of the season.
“Zac is very deserving to be recognized among the nation’s top collegiate pitchers,” says head coach Greg Van Zant. “He is doing a great job for us and I am very happy for him.”
Roger Clemens, who first burst into national prominence by leading the Texas Longhorns to the College World Series title in 1983, has consented to lend his name to a new annual award that will recognize the top pitcher in Division I baseball beginning with the 2004 championship season.
In its inaugural year, The Roger Clemens Award will be presented to the nation's top college pitcher at the conclusion of a gala dinner in Houston on July 15. All Division I head baseball coaches will take part in the voting for the honor, in addition to a selected panel of national media and all past winners of the Rotary Smith Award, which was retired after the 2003 dinner by the committee that is sponsoring the Clemens Award.
