MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - WVU volleyball coach Veronica Hammersmith today announced the signing of five student-athletes for the 2004 season.
"We feel that these five signees are all hard-workers and can contribute immensely to our program through the next four years," said Hammersmith. "We are bringing in three outside hitters to address our need for that position and we feel that all of these players can make a difference for us."
Megan Carroll, a native of Woodbridge, Va., was an all-area and all-region defensive specialist at Forest Park Senior High under coach Dan Jones. She captained a team that won the Class AAA Virginia state championship as a senior in 2003.
"We like Megan's defensive competitiveness and expect her to be a solid libero for us," said Hammersmith.
Her cousin, Patrick Carroll, will also attend WVU in 2004-05 as a member of the men's soccer team. Megan Carroll plans on majoring in exercise physiology at WVU.
Kimberly Hales, a middle-blocker out of Virginia Beach, Va., was the team captain for coach Heather Houser as a senior at Tallwood High. A four-year letter winner and member of the honor roll throughout high school, Hales was a second-team All-Beach selection as a junior. She plans on majoring in physical education at WVU.
"We needed another middle and Kim certainly fit the bill for our program," said Hammersmith. "She will add enthusiasm to the position and is a very hard worker."
Ashley Pappas is an outside hitter that played for nationally ranked Naperville North High in Lisle, Ill., and coach Ric Krebs. Pappas, who captured an AAU national championship with the Sports Performance Volleyball Club at the age of 15, was an all-conference and honorable mention all-state selection as a senior.
"Ashley is an accomplished outside hitter and knows the game very well," said Hammersmith. "She can serve-receive well and is a very effective hitter. We hope she can come in a compete for the outside spot right away."
Pappas will major in sports psychology at West Virginia.
Abby Tevis played under coach Dan Schall at North Allegheny High in Pittsburgh and was a first-team all-state, all-region, and all-section outside hitter as a senior. As the team captain in 2003, her team finished as the WPIAL runner-up and won a sectional championship.
"Abby is a good all-around player and an excellent defensive player," said Hammersmith. "She doesn't waste shots and can is also an extremely hard worker."
Tevis played club volleyball for the Pittsburgh Elite Club and Renaissance Club and was a scholar athlete for four years. She will major in exercise physiology at WVU.
Cara Wilber is a native of Georgetown, Calif., and played under coach Jeffrey Deter at Golden Sierra High, the same school that current Mountaineer sophomore Julie Hockenson attended.
"Cara is another great all-around player who could develop into a very solid outside hitter for us," said Hammersmith.
She was a Sacramento All-Metro second-team selection in 2003 and led a team that won the Northern California Division IV championship and finished as the state runner-up. Wilber was also named to the Division IV all-tournament team for her efforts.
