MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University director of athletics, Ed Pastilong announced today the slate for the upcoming 2004 women’s soccer season.
The Mountaineers, who ended the 2003 season ranked 10th in the country, open up their 2004 campaign at the Kentucky Invitational where they will face the Wildcats on Friday, Aug. 27, and then the Ohio Bobcats on Sunday, Aug. 29.
Five of WVU’s opponents in 2004 were NCAA tournament qualifiers in 2003. Purdue, Notre Dame, Boston College, Villanova and Virginia each made an appearance in the 2003 Women’s College Cup.
West Virginia’s schedule features nine home matches to be played in Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium and nine road contests at opposing campus sites.
This season, all BIG EAST matches will count toward conference standings as divisional play has been suspended for the current year. West Virginia’s BIG EAST schedule is highlighted by home matches against Villavona (September 24) and Notre Dame (October 1) and road trips to Boston College (September 19) and Rutgers (October 15).
In 2004, West Virginia will face Arizona and Kentucky for the first time in school history and will continue series play with its 16 other opponents.
Super Soccer Sunday, in its eighth year, will be held on Sunday, Oct. 3, prior to the match against Syracuse and in conjunction with the men’s contest versus Longwood.
“We are very excited to have the opportunity for all of our BIG EAST matches to count,” said head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “Between our conference and non-conference match-ups, we have a very demanding and competitive season ahead. We look forward to the challenge.”
