Baseball: St. John's Tops West Virginia

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – St. John’s pounded out 16 runs on 17 hits to defeat the WVU baseball team, 16-8, on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Hawley Field.
The Red Storm, swept by West Virginia in a doubleheader on Saturday, put together a six-run sixth inning and a seven-run seventh to pull ahead of the Mountaineers, whose season-high six-game winning streak was snapped with the loss.
St. John’s was led offensively by Kenny Devenney, who went 2 for 4 with a solo home run and a three-run double, and leadoff hitter Jim Martin who went 3 for 3 with three runs scored while reaching base six times on the day.
Anthony Derosa added a two-run home run for the Red Storm while P.J. Antoniato, Mike Rozema, Chris Joachim and Eddie Shultz had two hits each.
Junior Lee Fritz led the Mountaineers in going 3 for 5 with a solo home run and two RBI while senior Kurtis Clinton hit his fourth home run of the season to lead off the fifth inning.
St. John’s hurler Joe Reid (5-3) kept the WVU hitters in check for six innings, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out nine and walking two.
WVU starter Justin Asbury (1-3) was tagged with the loss after allowing two runs on five hits in one and two-third innings.
Jake Serfass, Kyle Matuszek and Justin Richards each had two hits for the Mountaineers.
West Virginia fell to 18-23 overall and 8-12 in the BIG EAST while the Red Storm improved to 28-16 on the season and 13-7 in the conference.
The game was stopped in the second inning and delayed for one hour and 21 minutes.
WVU returns to action on Saturday, May 8, to face conference foe Boston College in a doubleheader at 3 p.m., at Hawley Field.
