Women's Track: WVU Finishes 8th at BIG EAST

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The West Virginia University women’s track team finished eighth with a total of 45 points at the BIG EAST outdoor championships on May 1-2 at the Bauer Track and Field Complex in Piscataway, N.J.
West Virginia finished the weekend with eight top five finishes including a new school record in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. WVU also posted nine ECAC performances and three NCAA regional qualifications.
In Saturday’s action, freshman Abbie Stechschulte led West Virginia in the heptathlon. The Columbus Grove, Ohio, native finished fourth with an ECAC point total of 4,888. The freshman’s top event finishes came in the javelin (33.22m) and the 100 meter hurdles (14.57), both four place finishes.
Sophomore Nancy Regalbuto placed 14th in the heptathlon with 4,061 points. The Hedgesville, W.Va., native’s best finish of the day came in the high jump where she recorded a leap of 1.67 meters en route to a third place finish.
In the 3,000 meter steeplechase finals, junior Jennifer Davis broke a school record formerly held by her sister, Susan (10:54.87), after recording a regional qualifying time of 10:54.72 en route to a fourth place finish. Coincidentally, Susan Davis finished right on Jennifer’s heels with a fifth place ECAC finishing time of 10:57.56.
Senior Mary Beth Held placed 14th in the pole vault with a mark of 3.30 meters. Sophomore Lindsay Clark was West Virginia’s top finisher in the javelin where she recorded a toss of 39.29 meters en route to an eighth place finish.
In the 100 meter preliminaries, senior Ciara Chic placed 11th with a time of 12.07 while sophomore Junique Morris crossed the line in 13th with a time of 12.13. Both times were good enough for ECAC qualifications.
In Sunday’s competition, freshman Jessica Czaikowski finished seventh in the 100 meter dash finals with an ECAC qualifying time of 12.14. The Tottenham, Ontario, native also placed fourth in the 100 meter hurdles finals after posting another ECAC qualifying time of 13.96. On Saturday, Czaikowski recorded a time of 13.84 in the 100 meter hurdles preliminaries, qualifying the freshman for the NCAA regional championships in the event.
Junior Jennifer Kemp placed second in the 800 meter finals after crossing the line in a regional qualifying time of 2:09.44. The Edmonton, Alberta, native finished behind Villanova sophomore Marina Muncan who recorded a time of 2:07.61.
Fellow Edmonton, Alberta, native Tara Struyk finished fifth in the 5,000 meters with an ECAC qualifying time of 16:56.39.
In the final of the 400 meter hurdles, junior Pam Richardson crossed the line in 1:01.36, good enough for an ECAC qualification and a fifth place finish in the event.
Sophomore Nancy Regalbuto (1.60m) and junior Mary Greene (1.60m) finished eighth and ninth respectively in Sunday’s high jump.
In the weekend’s relay events, West Virginia’s 4x100 meter squad consisting of Junique Morris, Shani Boone, Czaikowski and Chic place fourth with an ECAC qualifying time of 46.91.
The 4x800 meter relay team of Jen Davis, Rachel Carden, Susan Davis and Kemp finished ninth after recording an ECAC qualifying time of 9:13.10.
In the 4x400 meter relay, Rhea Mann, Shani Boone, Kenyetta Conway and Richardson combined forces to finish eighth with a time of 3:52.05.
WVU’s participation in this weekend’s conference championships officially closes the 2004 BIG EAST outdoor season. The Mountaineers return to action on Saturday, May 8, when they travel to Harrisonburg, Va., to compete in the James Madison Invitational.
