Fryling made an immediate impact in coach Craig Turnbull’s lineup as a true freshman posting a 19-14 mark. He was one of seven NCAA qualifiers for the Mountaineers and recorded one NCAA tournament victory, a 10-6 decision over Nick Hayes of Northwestern.
Fryling’s 19 victories ties teammate Matt Lebe for ninth place on WVU’s list of most wins by a freshman. The Lansdale, Pa., native shared WVU’s Rookie Award with senior transfer Joe Clarke. The 165-pounder was also a member of the Eastern Wrestling League all-Academic Team.
The Mountaineers enjoyed yet another solid season under Turnbull. Ranked in the Top 25 throughout the entire season, the team earned a 16th place finish at the 2004 NCAA Tournament, won a share of the EWL Tournament title and saw the finest individual season by a Mountaineer in school history in national champion Greg Jones.
