Miller was brilliant in going the distance for a complete game shutout, scattering just five hits while striking out five. The righthander pushed his record to 5-5 on the year and has not allowed a run in his last 17 and 2/3 innings of work.
“Shawn was outstanding today,” says head coach Greg Van Zant. “He looked good warming up in the bullpen and went out there and attacked their hitters. He is so competitive and there was no way he was going to let anybody else finish the game for him.”
The Mountaineers scored in the first inning for the 26th time this season. Jake Serfass opened the inning with a base hit through the right side. Grant Psomas followed with a walk and both advanced a base on a Kurtis Clinton groundout. Stan Posluszny sharply hit a ball to deep secondbase, scoring Serfass for a 1-0 lead.
Clinton extended his hitting streak to 11 games in the third inning with a single through the left side, scoring a hustling Psomas who had reached base on a double. Psomas finished 2-for-2 with a walk on the afternoon.
West Virginia added one more run in the sixth inning when Kyle Matuszek took a first-pitch fastball over the leftfield wall for a solo home run, making it 3-0. ETSU’s Josh Kite picked up the loss and dropped to 2-3 on the season.
West Virginia extended their lead to 4-0 with a single run in the bottom of the seventh. Justin Richards led off the inning with a double to leftfield, then moved to third when Serfass reached on an error. Richards scored on a fly ball by Psomas. Third baseman Richards finished the game going 2-for-3.
The Buc’s Tim Turner hit a two-out triple in the top of the eighth before a 32-minute rain delay and were unable to score him from third.
The Mountaineers return to action for a non-conference night game at Akron on Wednesday, May 19, at 6:00 p.m.
