The clinics will be held at Creighton University at the Creighton Sports Complex. The YES clinic is an excellent opportunity for area youth to interact with some of the nation's top collegiate baseball coaches and student-athletes.
Van Zant, in his 10th season at the helm of the WVU baseball program, is one of 13 collegiate coaches to address the clinic on June 19-20. He is making his second trip to Omaha after taking part in the 1999 clinic.
"It's a great opportunity to work with young people who have an interest in baseball," says Van Zant. "It's an honor to be selected to work the best clinic in the country and see the College World Series in person. Getting to the World Series is our ultimate goal and this gives two of our players a chance to see what it takes to get there.”
Freshman David Carpenter and sophomore Doug Nelms have been chosen to attend the clinic with Van Zant. Carpenter, a catcher from Fairmont, W.Va., and Nelms, an infielder from Bristol, Va., have both provided excellent leadership as clinicians during Mountaineer baseball camps. The duo will challenge young people to strive for higher levels of achievement in both athletics and academics.
The popular YES program began in 1985 and is designed to promote volunteerism among collegiate coaches and student-athletes, and to provide community youth with an opportunity to interact with them and experience an NCAA championship. Each year YES attracts nearly 15,000 youth to approximately 30 clinics around the country.
