Rowing: WVU Finishes Strong in Season Finale

WORCESTER, Mass. - The West Virginia rowing team finished its 2004 spring season with a sixth place finish in varsity eight competition at the ECAC National Invitational Collegiate Regatta in Worcester, Mass., Sunday, May 10.
The team’s top boat began its day with a third place finish in their qualifying heat of the metro varsity eight race in 7:30.385. The boat finished over six seconds ahead of Delaware and Marist’s boat and only one second behind Rhode Island. Massachusetts won the heat in a time of 7:12.047.
In the Metro grand final the team would improve its time tremendously in route to a sixth place finish. The boat finished in 6:59.06, less than two seconds off of fifth place Buffalo. Like in the preliminaries Massachusetts would prove to be the best again as the boat won the competition with a time of 6:38.509.
The team would see action in two other races along with varsity eight racing. In varsity four competition the Mountaineers took a fourth place finish in its preliminary heat with a time of 10:27.531, finishing behind Rhode Island, Colgate and Massachusetts, respectively.
In the petite final WVU finished in 9:13.539 on its way to an eighth place finish overall. Marist grabbed the win in competition, finishing in 7:56.901
Rounding out the Mountaineers’ weekend the second varsity eight boat raced to a time of 8:36.701 in their preliminary heat, placing them in the petite final against Villanova. WVU downed the Wildcats by finishing the race in 7:38.264, compared to Villanova’s 8:03.623 time. UMass finished first in the grand final in 7:14.144.
