MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The WVU baseball team will play BIG EAST foe St. John's in a three-game series this weekend at Hawley Field.
The Mountaineers and the Red Storm will play a doubleheader on Saturday, May 1, starting at 1 p.m., and then play a single game on Sunday, May 2, also beginning at 1 p.m.
It will be the first home series for the Mountaineers since April 10 when WVU hosted rival Pitt in a doubleheader.
West Virginia (16-22, 6-11) has won seven of its last nine games (all on the road) and has won a season-high four straight.
Junior centerfielder Lee Fritz paces WVU in batting average with a .353 clip while sophomore Stan Posluszny is second with a .349 average and has bashed five home runs and 28 RBI.
Senior Kurtis Clinton has had a hot bat as of late with three home runs in his last six games and fellow senior Jake Serfass, who leads the team with six homers, is currently in the midst of a 14-game hitting streak.
St. John's (27-14, 12-5), picked to finish seventh in the preseason BIG EAST coaches' poll, has been a big surprise in the conference as they have put themselves in good position to claim the fourth and final spot in the BIG EAST tournament.
Catcher Blake Hershelman has been the big gun for the Red Storm, as he is hitting .333 with a team-leading six home runs and 37 RBI in starting all but two games this season.
Senior Anthony Vavaro leads a St. John's pitching staff with a team earned-run average of 3.58, which is tops in the BIG EAST. Varvaro shows a 6-1 record with a 3.64 ERA, 47 strikeouts and 34 walks.
