PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team (8-4, 2-2) fell to BIG EAST foe Rutgers, 5-2, on Friday, April 2, at the Rutgers Tennis Complex in Piscataway, N.J.
West Virginia’s lone victories on the day came in the singles department where freshman No. 3 seed Kelly Walsh defeated Alina Balasa, 7-6 (4), 3-6, 6-4 and senior Jennifer Watkins topped Jill Markowitz, 6-7 (3), 6-3, 10-3 at the No. 4 spot. Two of West Virginia’s four losses on the singles side came in three sets.
West Virginia was swept in each of its three doubles matches, losing each by a score of 8-6.
“This match could have gone either way,” coach Dan Silverstein says. “We had a lot of chances to win some close matches but we need to move on and focus on Seton Hall.”
Despite the close loss, Silverstein believes the Mountaineers are still in prime position to make it to postseason play.
“We still control our own destiny,” he says. “If we are able to win out in the conference we still have a legitimate shot at making the BIG EAST tournament.”
On Wednesday, Mar. 31, the Mountaineers defeated Morgan State at the Pittsburgh YMCA by a score of 6-0. Only six matches were played as a result of time constraints on the reserved courts.
The Mountaineers have little time to reflect on their loss to the Scarlet Knights. WVU is back in action on Saturday, April 3, at Seton Hall for a 4 p.m. contest.
