Former West Virginia University running back Amos Zereoue has signed a free-agent contract with the Oakland Raiders, it was announced Thursday.
Zereoue spent five seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers before being released March 11 after Pittsburgh signed Duce Staley.
Zereoue beat out all-pro Jerome Bettis for the starting job last year but managed just 433 yards and 3.3 yards per carry behind shaky offensive line play. He was eventually replaced by Bettis midway through the season. Zereoue’s best year with the Steelers came in 2002 when he rushed for a career-best 762 yards.
In 66 career games in Pittsburgh, Zereoue rushed for 1,697 yards with seven touchdowns and 95 receptions for 803 yards and one TD.
Zereoue replaces running back Charlie Garner who signed a free agent contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Zereoue joins former WVU teammate Jerry Porter in Oakland.
At West Virginia, Zereoue reached the 1,000-yard mark each season including a career-best 1,589 yards in 1997. As a junior in 1998 Zereoue, 27, rushed for 1,462 yards and was drafted in the third round by the Pittsburgh Steelers after forgoing his senior season.
