Women's Tennis: Award Winners Announced

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University women’s tennis coach Dan Silverstein announced the 2003-04 team award winners on Wednesday.
Senior Jennifer Watkins garnered two awards including the coach’s award and the most outstanding athlete award. The Huntington, W.Va., native finished the campaign with a singles record of 15-10 and a doubles of 14-11 to finish with a season’s record of 29-21. A one-time walk-on, Watkins played in each of her four seasons as a Mountaineer and finished 16th on the WVU top career record list with an overall mark of 106-78.
Freshman Kelly Walsh received the most improved athlete award. The Chalfont St. Giles, U.K., native began the season as the six seed and finished the campaign competing at the No. 2 and 3 spots for the Mountaineers. The exercise physiology major finished the year with a singles record of 11-11 and a doubles of 12-6 en route to an overall record of 23-17.
Sophomore Melissa Day was the recipient of the Jane Little memorial award. The Ballarat, Australia, native was West Virginia’s No. 1 seed throughout the year and compiled an overall record of 34-20, including a solid 18-10 mark in doubles play. This silver bowl, donated by the WVU Foundation, is given each year to the member of the women's tennis team who best exemplifies the qualities of sportsmanship and team spirit. Jane Little was a Charleston, W.Va., native who was a member of the first women's tennis team at West Virginia 30 years ago.
Freshman Ashley Constantine, a native of Binghamton, N.Y., was given the Martha T. Thorn award for her outstanding dedication to the WVU women’s tennis team throughout the 2003-04 season. The Martha T. Thorn award, given in honor of the founder of the WVU women’s tennis program, was created in 1997 and is given by the coaching staff to a team member in recognition of exceptional individual commitment.
West Virginia finished the 2003-04 campaign with a 10-9 record, its second consecutive winning season under third-year coach Dan Silverstein.
