MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University women's soccer team, in conjunction with the Betty Puskar Breast Care Center at WVU's Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center, will wrap up its spring season with a weekend of events to raise awareness for the fight against breast cancer.
The weekend will kick off on Saturday, April 24, with an eight team tournament. Games will be played at both Mountaineer Field and at the new WVU practice facility. Including the Mountaineers, six collegiate teams make up the tournament field along with two club squads. The participating teams are: Duquesne, Loyola (Md.), Ohio, Navy, St. Francis, Beadling, PWSI Eclipse and West Virginia.
Games will begin at 10 a.m., with WVU taking on PWSI Eclipse at the WVU practice field. The Mountaineers will take the field against St. Francis (Pa.) at 11:40 a.m., and will be on Mountaineer Field at 1:20 p.m., versus Loyola (Md.). The championship match is set for 3 p.m., at the practice field.
On Sunday, April 25, members of the women's soccer team will conduct a shooting clinic for boys and girls ages five to 18 from 4 p.m., to 5:30 p.m., at the WVU practice field. A $10 donation to the Breast Care Center is required for participation.
To conclude the weekend, the Mountaineers will participate in the second annual Breast Cancer Soccer Challenge. Team members will challenge each other to see whose soccer skills are the best.
Money raised from the challenge, and all of the weekend's other events, will be donated to the Betty Puskar Breast Care Center.
"We are very excited about this weekend," said head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. "This is not just about finishing our spring season against some great competition, but it is more importantly about heightening breast cancer awareness."
