PITTSBURGH - The West Virginia University women's tennis team fell to Maryland-Baltimore County, 4-2, in their final home match of the season on Thursday, April 22, at the Pittsburgh YMCA.
West Virginia (10-8, 3-5) lost four of the day's six singles matches en route to the defeat. No doubles matches were played as a result of time constraints.
WVU's two singles victories came from senior Jennifer Watkins and freshman Ashley Constantine. Watkins, playing her final home match in a Mountaineer uniform, defeated Aimee Lim, 7-6, 7-5. Constantine, a native of Binghamton, N.Y., topped Veena Rao, 6-4, 6-4.
"There were a lot of highly contested matches today that could have gone either way," coach Dan Silverstein says. "Although the loss is disappointing, I thought our girls really fought hard and hung in there against a tough team."
West Virginia plays its final match of the year on Sunday, April 25, at Virginia Tech. The match is scheduled to get underway in Blacksburg, Va., at 11 a.m.
