MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University senior guard Kate Bulger was drafted by the Minnesota Lynx with the No. 38 pick of the third round in today's WNBA draft.
Bulger, a Pittsburgh, native, becomes the first Mountaineer women's basketball player in the program's history to be drafted by the WNBA.
"I'm very, very excited for the opportunity to keep playing," Bulger says. "It says a lot about our program and the opportunities that are now available for future Mountaineers to play in the WNBA."
"It's a very exciting time for the program and Kate Bulger," WVU head coach Mike Carey says. "I'm very happy for her. She's worked very hard and deserves this. She'll make the most of her opportunity and will be a great professional player.
"It says a lot about our program and where we're headed," Carey adds. "We play the type of basketball where there will be opportunities to play professionally and this is just a taste of what the future of West Virginia basketball holds."
This season, Bulger, who started every game of her Mountaineer career (115), guided WVU to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1992 with a 21-11 record, the third-best in school history. The all-BIG EAST second team performer became the BIG EAST's and West Virginia's all-time three-point field goals made leader with 161 and 301, respectively.
Bulger also finished her career with 1,732 career points, good for fourth all-time in school history, and a 15.1 points-per-game average. Bulger also concluded her career as WVU's all-time three-point field goal percentage leader (41.6 percent).
