MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- West Virginia University football players Scott Gyorko, Mike Lorello and Craig Wilson received the Iron Mountaineer Award today, presented to the most outstanding performers in WVU's off-season strength and conditioning program.
The winners must finish in the "excellent" category of testing at the conclusion of winter conditioning, measuring the bench, squat, clean lift and 225 repetitions, vertical jump, sit reach, broad jump and 20-yard shuttle, 300-yard shuttle and 40-yard dash times. Winners are selected from three groups: FB/TE/LB/SP, QB/RB/WR/DB and OL/DL. Gyorko is a senior linebacker from Morgantown, W.Va., while Lorello is a junior safety from Powell, Ohio. Wilson is a sophomore nose guard from River Ridge, La.
The distinctive award is a 6.2-lb. coal statue made entirely of native West Virginian natural resources: coal, wood and natural wood stain. The sculptor was Bob Dickinson of Ansted, W.Va., one of only four active coal carvers in the United States. One permanent Iron Mountaineer with the names of all winners is on display in the WVU strength and conditioning complex.
The presentation was made at today’s Gold-Blue Game. Past winners were Charles Emanuel and Bernardo Amerson (1996); Steve Lippe and Curtis Keaton (1997); Eric de Groh, Shawn Foreman, Tanner Russell and Boo Sensabaugh (1998); Barrett Green, Khori Ivy, Greg Robinette and Boo Sensabaugh (1999); Avon Cobourne, Chris Edmonds, Khori Ivy and Antwan Lake (2000); Shawn Hackett and David Upchurch (2001); Lance Nimmo and Rasheed Marshall (2002); and Quincy Wilson and Pat Liebig (2003).
