TOLEDO, Ohio – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team defeated Toledo, 6-1, in non-conference action on Wednesday, April 14, in Toledo Ohio.
The Mountaineers (9-6, 2-4) swept the Rockets in singles competition but lost the doubles point after falling in two of three matches.
Sophomore Melissa Day defeated Toledo’s Myriam Cueva, 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 1 spot while freshman No. 2 seed Kelly Walsh outlasted Jen Meister, 6-3, 6-0. At the No. 3 position, senior Jennifer Watkins topped Daniella Moran, 6-1, 6-2 and sophomore No. 4 seed Raynie Theis defeated Betsy Hoffman, 6-0, 6-2. Ashley Constantine proved to be too much for Claire Smalley, winning 6-0, 6-2 in No. 5 seed action. Freshman Sydney Thornhill won by default after Toledo forfeited the No. 6 seed match.
In doubles action, West Virginia’s lone victory of the day came from the tandem of Day and Watkins who topped Cueva and Paravicini, 9-8 (7-1).
“I thought our girls rebounded extremely well today,” coach Dan Silverstein says. “Today’s results will give us a lot of confidence going into the Backyard Brawl on Friday.”
