KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The West Virginia University women’s track team achieved nine BIG EAST, six ECAC and two east regional qualifiers at the Sea Ray Relays on April 9-10 in Knoxville, Tenn.
In Friday’s competition, junior Jennifer Kemp placed ninth in the 1,500 meters with a BIG EAST and ECAC qualifying time of 4:29.81.
Freshman Jessica Czaikowski’s 10th place finishing time of 13.90 in the 100-meter hurdles was good enough for an NCAA east regional qualification. The top five finishers in each event at the East Regional championship, to be held on May 27-29 in Gainesville, Fla., automatically advance to the NCAA championships. The Tottenham, Ontario, native’s time also qualified her for the BIG EAST and ECAC championships.
In the 400 meter hurdles, junior Pam Richardson and freshman Rhea Mann qualified for both the BIG EAST and ECAC championships after recording times of 1:02.30 and 1:03.41 respectively.
Senior Mary Beth Held was the only other Mountaineer to achieve a BIG EAST qualifying performance Friday after posting a mark of 3.35 meters in the pole vault.
In Saturday’s action, sophomore Susan Davis achieved a time of 10:54.87 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The Romney, W.Va., native’s time set a school record in the event and qualified her for the BIG EAST, ECAC and east regional championships.
WVU’s final BIG EAST and ECAC qualifier of the weekend was its 4x400 meter relay squad who posted a time of 3:50.28.
In other action on the weekend, WVU’s 4x100 meter shuttle hurdle squad consisting of Nancy Regalbuto (14.7), Czaikowski (13.4), Mary Greene (15.8) and Abbie Stechschulte (14.7) put together a strong performance en route to a fifth place finishing time of 59.41.
“I’m real happy with the performances we put together this weekend,” Coach Jeff Huntoon says. “It was great to come out of the weekend with so many BIG EAST and ECAC qualifiers to go along with a new school record-holder in the 3,000 meter steeplechase.”
The Mountaineers return to action on April 15-17 when they travel to Mt. San Antonio, Calif., to compete in the Mt. Sac Relays.
