LOUISVILLE, KY. – A shorthanded West Virginia University women’s tennis team (5-3) dropped a 7-0 decision to Louisville (12-5) on Saturday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center in Louisville, Ky.
As a result of Melissa Day’s injury Friday against Cincinnati, senior Jennifer Watkins was forced to move up and play the No. 1 seed, Courtney Howell battled at the two spot, Raynie Theis was the third seed, Kelly Walsh manned the fourth seed, Ashley Constantine competed at the fifth spot and Sydney Thornhill saw her first action of the season as the sixth seed.
“Melissa’s absence made it difficult for everyone today,” coach Dan Silverstein says. “I thought the girls competed well despite having to move up a spot. At this point we are working to remain positive and get ready for our next match.”
The Mountaineers have eight days off before traveling to Northridge, Ca., to take on Cal State Northridge on Mar. 14.
