CINCINNATI, OHIO - The West Virginia University women’s tennis team fell in a 4-3 heartbreaker to Cincinnati Friday at the Five Seasons Country Club in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The Bearcats (6-6), who fell to George Washington earlier in the afternoon, ended the Mountaineers (5-2) four game winning streak while simultaneously ending their own six game losing skid. West Virginia’s last loss was to No. 21 Miami in Coral Gables, Fla. on Feb. 1.
In singles action, sophomore No. 1 seed Melissa Day was forced to withdraw from her match against Cincinnati’s Lyndsey Molony due to an injury suffered during the contest.
Senior Courtney Howell and freshman Ashley Constantine collected West Virginia's lone singles victories on the day. Howell defeated Samantha Liu 6-2, 6-0, while Constantine topped Mariana Lozano (CIN) 6-7, 6-0, (11-9). The Mountaineers ended up dropping four of six singles matches on the afternoon.
Despite the team’s loss, West Virginia garnered the doubles point after winning two of three matches. Raynie Theis and Kelly Walsh defeated Liu/Jill Klauck, 8-5, while Constantine/Howell beat Kirby Doran/Lozano, 8-1.
“You have to give Cincinnati credit in terms of how they executed in their singles today,” coach Dan Silverstein says. “Today's match showed us we have a lot of work to do.”
