MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University men’s basketball coach John Beilein announced today that freshmen Tyler Relph and Jerrah Young have decided to transfer at the end of the academic year.
Relph, a 6-0 guard from Victor, N.Y., played in all 31 games with five starts. He averaged 5.0 points, 0.9 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 17.7 minutes per game last season. He scored a season-high 12 points against Florida and his top assist performance was eight against Maryland.
Young, a 6-6 forward from Chicago, Ill., played in 21 games with three starts. He averaged 0.8 points, 1.5 rebounds, 0.4 blocks and 7.5 minutes per game last season. He scored a season-high six points against Georgetown and his top rebounding performance was six at Providence.
“Both Tyler and Jerrah worked hard for us in the classroom and on the court. They both have expressed interest in transferring,” Beilein says. “Our basketball staff appreciated their efforts this past season and their honesty in wanting to transfer. While I am disappointed at their decision, I understand that it is a part of college basketball today. We will work with both Tyler and Jerrah to help them fulfill their wishes.”
West Virginia completed its 2003-04 basketball season last Monday night with a 67-64 loss at Rutgers in the NIT. The Mountaineers finished with a 17-14 record.
