Gymnastics: Six Mountaineers Honored By EAGL

PITTSBURGH - Six members of the West Virginia University gymnastics team were honored by the East Atlantic Gymnastics League Friday at their annual awards banquet at the Pittsburgh Hilton.
Leading the way for WVU with a total of six awards was freshman Janae Cox. The Otisco, Ind., native became the first West Virginia gymnast to earn EAGL rookie of the year honors. Cox garnered first-team all-EAGL recognition in the vault, uneven bars, balance beam and all-around. The freshman also earned second-team all-EAGL honors in the floor excercise.
Sophomore Gretchen Richter was the only other Mountaineer to earn first-team honors on the evening. The Madisonville, Texas, native garnered first-team all-EAGL recognition on the balance beam.
Sophomore Alyssa Desantis earned second-team all-EAGL accolades on the balance beam while juniors Carri Nagle and Kari Williams garnered second-team honors on the uneven bars and vault respectively.
Junior Jessica Bartgis had her own share of success on the evening after earning second-team all-EAGL honors on the balance beam and the all-around.
Early in the evening, former EAGL gymnast's of the week were honored along with the league's all-academic performers. West Virginia's Jessica Bartgis and Janae Cox were honored as past recipients of the EAGL gymnast of the week award. Bartgis, Cox, Aimee Brown, Casey DePerro, Alyssa DeSantis and Lequita Williams each received certificates awarding their efforts in the classroom.
The Mountaineers return to action on Saturday, Mar. 20, at 6 p.m. when they take part in the ninth annual EAGL championships at the Petersen Events Center in Pittsburgh.
