Wrestling: Five Win Opening Matches At NCAAs

ST. LOUIS – Five West Virginia University wrestlers won opening matches at the 2004 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships on Thursday morning at the Savvis Center in St. Louis, MO.

Mountaineers Joe Clarke (141), Mike Torriero (149), Matt Lebe (157), Greg Jones (184) and Matt Daddino (197) all won first round bouts for WVU.
Clarke and Torriero both posted 7-6 decisions as Torriero upset No. 5 seed Trent Paulson of Iowa State.
Ninth-seeded Lebe advanced with a 10-7 victory over Iowa’s Joe Johnston in a revenge match from a year ago. Johnston eliminated Lebe from the 2003 NCAA Tournament.
Jones, the top seed at 184-pounds, dominated Duke’s Frank Cornely en route to a 22-7 technical fall at 6:50 of round one.
Daddino was the last Mountaineer to advance with his 8-3 decision victory of North Carolina State’s Zach Garren.
Casey Brewster (125) and Zac Fryling (165) both lost opening matches via pinfall. Senior Brewster next faces Eastern Wrestling League foe Peter Derstine of Clarion. True freshman Fryling will take on Nick Hayes from Northwestern in the consolation bracket.
Session II is scheduled to resume at 6:30 p.m. (CST) this evening.
