MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University point guard Yolanda Paige was named to the 2004 BIG EAST all-tournament team announced yesterday evening.
Paige, a finalist for the Nancy Lieberman point guard of the year award, guided West Virginia to a 2-1 mark in the BIG EAST tournament and the semifinals for the first time in school history.
She is the first Mountaineer to ever make the all-BIG EAST tournament team.
Fourth nationally in assists (as of March 8) and selected to the all-BIG EAST third team this year by the league's coaches, Paige averaged 16.0 points, 8.0 assists, 5.7 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 38.7 minutes per contest in the BIG EAST tournament.
In the opening round game against St. John's, an 84-59 victory over the Red Storm, Paige nearly produced a quadruple-double with game-highs of 22 points, 13 assists, eight steals and seven rebounds in 36 minutes of action. Her eight steals set a BIG EAST tournament standard for most steals in a game. Her 13 assists tied the tournament record for most assists in a game.
In WVU's 58-47 upset of No. 23 Villanova, Paige scored a game-high 16 points with six rebounds and three assists in all 40 minutes of action.
She followed that performance up with 10 points and eight assists in WVU's loss to Rutgers in the semi-finals.
For the season, Paige averages 12.1 points and 7.9 assists per game for the Mountaineers.
