Baseball: WVU Falls to Marist

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The WVU baseball team (1-3) was defeated by Marist (2-3), 12-5, Saturday evening at the Hughes Brothers Baseball Challenge in Wilmington, N.C.
West Virginia starter Shawn Miller (1-1) got off to a rocky start as he allowed four runs on three walks and two hit batters in the first inning.
Marist would tag on two more runs in the second off RBI doubles by Keith Brachold and Jimmy Board, giving the Red Foxes a 6-2 advantage.
WVU’s Grant Psomas doubled in Lee Fritz, who led off the inning with a double, to cut the Marist lead to 6-3 in the top of the third.
Miller was pulled after walking the first batter in the bottom of the third. He allowed six runs, four earned, on two hits while walking four and striking out three.
The Red Foxes scored two runs off reliever Wes Osbourn in the third to take an 8-3 lead. West Virginia senior Jake Serfass roped an RBI double that plated Michael Christoforo to make the score 8-4 in the top of the fourth.
Marist starter George Heath picked up the win after allowing four runs, three earned, in six innings pitched while striking out seven and walking two. Brian Krummenacker tossed the final three innings to earn the save.
Lee Fritz led the Mountaineers with three hits while Serfass, Psomas, Kurtis Clinton and Christoforo added two hits apiece.
Bryan Towler had two doubles and two RBI for Marist while Travis Musolf added three hits.
The Mountaineers return to action on Sunday, Feb. 29, to face UNC-Wilmington at 4 p.m., at Brooks Field.
