Women's Tennis: WVU Tops Duquesne

MONROEVILLE, Pa. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team (4-1) extended its winning streak to three games with a 6-1 victory over Duquesne (3-2) on Friday, Feb. 26, at the Oxford Athletic Club in Monroeville, Pa.
Melissa Day started the scoring for the Mountaineers with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Duquesne’s Alina Klinova at No. 1 singles. Senior Jennifer Watkins continued her solid play with a hard-fought 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 victory over Katie Riedinger in No. 2 singles. No. 4 Courtney Howell defeated Alicia McNamara 6-2, 6-3 while Kelly Walsh defeated Sarah Shanahan 6-3, 6-0 at No. 5 singles. Freshman Ashley Constantine defeated Ciara McDermott 6-4, 6-0 at No. 6 to close out West Virginia’s scoring in the singles department.
West Virginia’s only loss in the singles category came after the match was clinched. Sophomore Raynie Theis fell to Duquesne’s Jacqueline Hughes in one of the final matches of the day by the score of 6-7, 6-2, 7-6.
The Mountaineer’s clinched the doubles point by taking two of three matches from the visiting Dukes. The duo of Day/Watkins defeated Duquesne’s Riedlinger/Hughes 9-7 while Theis/Walsh topped Klinova/Shanahan 8-1. Duquesne’s lone doubles victory came when Wagner/McDermott defeated Howell/Constantine 8-4.
“This is was a great team victory,” coach Dan Silverstein says. “Everyone was a part of this victory today. We are feeling great about our team going into the weekend.”
West Virginia takes Friday off before returning to the court on Saturday when they host Maryland-Baltimore County in a noon match at the Oxford Athletic Club in Monroeville, Pa.
