Gymnastics: WVU Downs Michigan and Maryland

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The No. 23 West Virginia University gymnastics team (9-3-1) downed visiting Michigan (6-3), ranked No. 13, and EAGL foe Maryland (6-7) Sunday afternoon at the WVU Coliseum in a meet that honored 30 years of WVU gymnastics under head coach Linda Burdette.
The Mountaineers tied the eighth-highest team total in school history, a 196.375, to secure the tri-meet victory over the Wolverines (196.2) and the Terrapins (194.95).
West Virginia was paced by freshman all-arounder Janáe Cox who finished second in the all-around competition with a career-best 39.55. Cox scored a 9.9 or better on three out of the four events.
Trailing by 0.15 at the end of the third rotation, the Mountaineers scored a season-high 49.4 on floor to seal the win. Senior Jessica Bartgis led the way for WVU on the event, scoring a career-high 9.925. Junior Carri Nagle and sophomore Gretchen Richter also set career marks with a 9.875 and a 9.85, respectively.
Richter, a Madisonville, Texas, native, also scored a career high on the balance beam with a 9.875 mark.
The victories moved coach Burdette to within four wins of 500 for her career.
West Virginia returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 28, at 7 p.m., when they travel to East Lansing, Mich., for a tri-meet with Michigan State and Ohio State.
