The Citadel is hosting Old Dominion, Richmond and West Virginia in the Homewood Suites Shootout with each of the four teams playing three games in round-robin format. WVU will battle Old Dominion on Friday afternoon to begin the shootout.
“We are very excited about the opportunity we have this weekend to open our season against three of the better baseball programs in the East in Old Dominion, The Citadel and Richmond,” says head coach Greg Van Zant. “Our players and coaches have worked extremely hard since school started in August and we are looking forward to playing at Riley Park, a terrific professional baseball facility in Charleston.”
The Mountaineers look to improve upon a 2003 performance (36-19 Overall, 18-6 BIG EAST) in which they reached the BIG EAST Championship for the first time in three years and boasted one of the nation’s best offensive attacks.
Van Zant enters his 10th season at the helm of the WVU baseball program. West Virginia was selected fourth in the BIG EAST preseason poll, receiving one first place vote. The Mountaineers will be led by five preseason All-BIG EAST picks in seniors Kurtis Clinton and Jake Serfass, juniors Zac Cline and Lee Fritz and sophomore Stan Posluszny.
“Competing against ballclubs this good, this early in the season, should help give us a true indication of areas we will need to improve on in order for us to be successful when our BIG EAST season begins in five weeks,” says Van Zant.
