TORONTO – Former West Virginia University standout Rebecca Stallwood and current Mountaineer senior Megan Metcalfe finished first and fourth respectively at the 2004 Canadian cross country championships on Saturday, Dec. 4, in Toronto, Ont.
The duo’s top finishes propelled them to a qualification in the 2005 world cross country championships to be held on March 19-20, 2005, in Saint Galmier, France.
Stallwood, a native of Burlington, Ont., improved from last year’s ninth place finish to claim the gold in 20:25. Metcalfe, an Edmonton, Alb., native, crossed the line in fourth after registering a time of 20:52.
Stallwood, a 2002 WVU graduate, earned two All-America honors as a member of West Virginia’s record breaking distance medley relay squads at the 1999 and 2000 NCAA indoor championships. Stallwood currently holds the second fastest 5,000 meter time in school history with a mark of 16:26.44. The 2001 West Virginia state NCAA Woman of the Year owns the university’s second best 3,000 meter time at 9:31.24.
Metcalfe recently broke West Virginia’s all-time All-American record after posting her eighth All-America honor at the 2004 NCAA cross country championships. The record was formerly held by assistant coach Pat Itanyi who recorded seven All-America honors including a national championship in the long jump at the 1997 NCAA outdoor championships. Metcalfe has earned five All-America honors in indoor track, two in cross country and one in outdoor track.
