SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The West Virginia University men’s swimming and diving team finished second and the women climbed one spot to finish fifth at the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Ind., on Saturday, Dec. 4.
The Mountaineer men ended the three-day meet with 1,116 points putting them ahead of nine teams and only behind host Notre Dame in the final standings. The women used a strong effort on the final day of competition to finish with 864 points.
“Tonight the Mountaineers showed a lot of heart,” said head coach Sergio Lopez. “We had breakthrough performances from our upperclassmen and underclassmen alike."
One swimmer who had a huge day was freshman Erin Tudor. Tudor won the 100-free event in a time of 52.16 seconds. The time marked a career best for her.
Tudor also led off the 400-free relay that finished third on the evening. Tudor, Livia Cascao, Bonnie Sutton and Tina Gabrilo combined to finish the race in 3:40.31, which was eight seconds faster than their previous season best.
Although the men did not win any events on the final day of competition several Mountaineers put up several impressive performances.
