TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – West Virginia University cross country assistant coach Sean Cleary was named Mid-Atlantic regional coach of the year by a vote of 31 regional coaches on Sunday, Nov. 21, at the NCAA championship banquet in Terre Haute, Ind.
Cleary, a native of Georgetown, Ontario, led West Virginia to its first-ever Mid-Atlantic regional championship and a 15th place finish at the 2004 NCAA cross country championships. The finish was WVU’s highest NCAA finish in school history.
“These awards are a wonderful way to congratulate a coach for an entire program’s hard work,” Cleary says. “I’ve never been prouder of an entire group’s commitment to a goal. This group of women refused to fail and in the process created the most wonderful memory of my coaching career. Coach Jeff Huntoon and this team should be applauded for all of their hard work.”
Cleary was a member of the 1991-92 Mountaineer cross country team. He helped the 1991 squad capture the Atlantic 10 cross country title and earned all-conference honors as a senior while helping the Mountaineers to a second-place conference finish.
