MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rifle team will host the Mountaineer Invitational this weekend. The two-day event held at the Mountaineer Rifle Range will take place Saturday and Sunday with competition beginning each day at 8 a.m.
The eight WVU rifle team members will shoot as individuals as the only collegiate team participating, while a total of 36 competitors from junior teams will be on hand. Junior teams from several states will compete including Virginia, Pennsylvania and South Carolina.
The event held every year WVU has fielded a varsity team will not include other college teams for the first time, but the event gives the Mountaineers their only competitive action in a two-month span between dual matches.
“We get the benefit of competition which is critical with the time we’ve had off,” said WVU head coach Marsha Beasley. “This kept us going another three weeks.”
The Mountaineers (1-3, 0-2) won their first match of the season against Texas Christian on Nov. 14 and after this weekend’s invitational will return to action Jan. 14 for a Great America Rifle Conference match against Nebraska at Palmyra, Pa.
