MORGANTOWN, W.Va -- West Virginia University senior guard Sherell Sowho has been named the BIG EAST's co-player of the week for her efforts in guiding WVU to two wins last week. She shares the honor with Boston College's Jessalyn Deveny.
The Bristol, Va., native averaged 23.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.0 blocks and 2.0 assists last week in victories over St. Francis, Pa., (74-68) and Coppin State (67-53).
Sowho tallied back-to-back 20 point efforts for the first time in her career against the Red Flash and Lady Eagles and combined to shoot 17-of-30 (.567) from the field, including 7-of-14 from three-point range.
Against St. Francis, she scored 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting and tallied three three-pointers. Against Coppin State, Sowho scored 24 points on 8-of-14 shooting, including 4-of-6 from three-point range with five rebounds and three blocks.
It is her first career BIG EAST player of the week honor. She has scored double figures in all eight games this season.
Sowho's award marks the third consecutive week that a Mountaineer has at least shared the BIG EAST player of the week honor. Senior guard Yolanda Paige shared the award with Deveny Nov. 29, while sophomore guard Meg Bulger was in sole possessor of the award last week.
It is the first time the Mountaineers have had three consecutive players of the week since joining the BIG EAST in 1995-96. WVU tallied back-to-back player of the week honors in 1996-97 when Talisha Hargis and Rebecca Burbridge notched the honors Dec. 9 and Dec. 16.
West Virginia resumes play on Tuesday, Dec. 21, at 1 p.m. at East Carolina.
