“We are very excited and welcome another challenging schedule for the 2005 season,” says WVU coach Greg Van Zant. “The schedule is strong and the early season tournaments will prepare us for BIG EAST play.”
The Mountaineers open the season at Norfolk State for a pair of games before playing in two South Carolina tournaments. The trips include traveling to Myrtle Beach, S.C., for the Baseball at the Beach tournament and a repeat visit to Charleston, S.C., for The Citadel Tournament.
During those first three weeks of the season, West Virginia will face nationally-ranked Clemson, East Carolina, Coastal Carolina and North Carolina State.
“We will return to Charleston where the people at The Citadel do a great job,” says 11-year veteran Van Zant. “It gives our guys a chance to face ranked competition right from the start.”
On March 9, WVU opens its home slate against Duquesne for a single game contest. The Mountaineers will then host three straight opponents at Hawley Field before the conference opener.
Boston College travels to Morgantown for the BIG EAST opener on March 24. Other BIG EAST teams appearing at Hawley Field include Georgetown, Rutgers, St. John’s and Seton Hall.
“There are 25 league games on the schedule,” adds Van Zant. “And each of those games will be a tough, drag-out game. The BIG EAST portion of the schedule is solid year-in, year-out.”
The BIG EAST road opener is slated for April 2, when WVU travels to Storrs, Conn., for a three-game series against Connecticut. The Mountaineers make BIG EAST road trips to Pitt, Villanova and Notre Dame.
The Mountaineers will play host 34 times, including five night games, and take to the road for 25 contests in WVU’s 111th season of baseball.
