Swimming: WVU Defeats Duquesne and Youngstown

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men and women’s swimming and diving teams notched a total of three victories on Saturday, Nov. 6, at the WVU Natatorium.
The WVU men (2-1-0) came out of the day 1-0 after defeating Duquesne by a score of 132-92. The Mountaineer women (3-2-0) scored two victories on the day after topping Duquesne (156-80) and Youngstown State (154-80).
The Mountaineer men showcased their dominance on Saturday by winning nine of the meet’s 13 races. WVU’s titles came in the 400 yard medley relay, 1,000 yard freestyle, 200 yard freestyle, 50 yard freestyle, 200 yard IM, three meter dive, 100 yard butterfly, 100 yard freestyle and one meter dive.
The four-man team of Rick Mann, Felipe Cunha, Pedro Pinto and Matt Drozd began the day by winning the 400 yard medley relay with an overall time of 3:27.85. Steve Earley, Arda Kostem, Pablo Marmolejo and Kyle Gallo placed second in the event with a time of 3:36.51.
Kevin Van Buskirk defeated Clayton Dean in the 1,000 Free after finishing with a time of 10:01.05 while Tommy Fletcher recorded a time of 1:46.95 to win the 200 Free championship. Kyle Williams won the 100 Free with a time of 48.37. The 50 Free was also won by a Mountaineer after Chris Hagerdon won the race with a time of 21.00.
In the 200 IM, Marmolejo topped Duquesne’s Ian Walsh by over 10 seconds at 1:54.59 to win the title. Pinto was the top finisher in the 100 Butterfly (50.81) while Rick Mann (52.21), Hagerdon (52.64) and Dave Matthews (53.72) finished second, third and fourth respectively.
The Mountaineer divers were led by Brian Donahue who placed first in the three meter dive with a score of 263.55. Bob Butcher was the top finisher in the one meter dive with a score of 264.60.
The WVU women also closed out the day by winning nine of 13 championships. The Mountaineer women won the 400 yard medley relay, 1,000 yard freestyle, 200 yard freestyle, 50 yard freestyle, 200 yard IM, 100 yard butterfly, 100 yard freestyle, 100 yard backstroke and 100 yard breaststroke.
The women also opened the day with a victory in the 400 yard medley relay when Tina Gabrilo, Megan Carlson, Julia Warnken and Erin Tudor took the title with a time of 4:01.29.
Ashley Bissett won the 1,000 Free with a time of 10:43.13, Tudor was the 200 Free winner with a mark of 1:59.15 and Cascao took the 100 and 50 Free titles with times of 55.48 and 21.00 respectively.
In the 200 IM, Gabrilo was the outright champion with a mark of 2:11.08 while Chelsea Ademski (2:15.17) and Bonnie Sutton (2:15.63) placed second and third. Julia Warnken represented West Virginia with a 100 Butterfly title after recording a time of 1:00.25 in the event.
In the 100 Back, Julia Warnken registered a time of 1:00.84 to bring home another WVU championship while Carlson edge two Duquense swimmers to win the 100 Breast in 1:08.33.
The men and women’s squads return to action on Friday, Nov. 12, when they travel to Louisville, Ky. to battle Louisville and Ohio State. The race is scheduled to begin at approximately 5 p.m.
