MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University women’s soccer player Ashley Weimer has advanced to the state level of Rhodes Scholar competition.
The senior defender is one of six West Virginia University students to advance out of the University to the next round of interviews.
Weimer, a native of North Huntingdon, Pa., is applying in Pennsylvania. She will have two days of interviews on Nov. 16 and 17 at the University of Pittsburgh.
Following state level interviews, four candidates from Pennsylvania will be sent on to the district level. District interviews will be held in New York.
There are eight Rhodes Scholar districts in the United States and each will select four scholars for a total of 32.
Rhodes Scholar committees are looking for individuals who not only excel academically, but also show leadership potential, a concern for the less fortunate and an appreciation of both the body and mind.
Weimer is a three-year starter in the West Virginia back line. This season, she’s helped guide the Mountaineers to a 14-5-0 record. A nursing major, she currently boasts a 3.92 GPA.
