MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University wrestling team is set to host the 23rd annual WVU Open on Sunday, Nov. 7, at 10 a.m., in the Shell Building.
"We start the season with our tournament here which is nice to allow everybody to wrestle," head coach Craig Turnbull said. "Whether it’s a fifth-team guy or first-team guy, everybody gets the chance to wrestle. It functions in a real nice way to get things started.”
The all-day event features individuals and teams from over 20 institutions and wrestling clubs. The tournament is a classic open tournament where there are no team scores and anyone is able to participate. A year ago, six WVU wrestlers advanced to the championship match with three grapplers claiming titles, including 157-pound junior Matt Lebe.
The Mountaineers enter the season tabbed the nation’s 10th-best team in preseason polls released by Amateur Wrestling News, InterMat.com and TheWrestlingMall.com. WVU returns 13 letterwinners from last year’s EWL championship team. Turnbull enters his 27th season at the helm of WVU’s wrestling program.
Sunday's Schedule:
Skin-checks at 7:30 a.m.
Weigh-ins at 8:00 a.m.
Live Wrestling at 10:00 a.m.
