MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team hosts its final home match of the season when it battles Youngstown State at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 3, at the WVU Coliseum.
West Virginia’s match with Youngstown marks its final non-conference contest of the season. WVU (16-10, 3-3) enters Wednesday’s match with a 13-7 record against non-BIG EAST opponents this season.
Prior to Wednesday’s match, seniors Alison Zemanski and Brandice Studnicka will be honored as they play their final match in the friendly confines of the WVU Coliseum. Both players are four year letterwinners who have been integral to the resurgence of the WVU volleyball program.
Zemanski, a native of Perrysburg, Ohio, is second on the team in kills this season with 304 and first on the squad with a .338 hitting percentage. The middle blocker’s .338 attack percentage is also third best in the BIG EAST. Zemanski leads the team and the conference with 141 blocks, an average of 1.5 rejections per game.
Studnicka, a Clay Center, Neb., native, leads the team in assists this season with 1,010 and is fifth in the conference in assists per game with an 11.35 average. The setter is currently third on WVU’s all-time assist list with 3,348 in her career. If Studnicka is able to record 12 assists in Wednesday’s match against Youngstown, she will pass Tracey Thompson for second place on the all-time list.
Wednesday’s match is important to the Mountaineers for a variety of reasons. West Virginia is currently tied for fifth in the BIG EAST with Boston College who the Mountaineers defeated by a 3-2 margin on Sunday, Oct. 31. If WVU is able to win the majority of its remaining matches, it will have an opportunity to finish in the top four of the conference and earn its first BIG EAST tournament berth since 1998.
