Game captains for West Virginia were Rasheed Marshall, John Pennington, Jerry White and Ben Lynch. Coach Rich Rodriguez selects game captains each week. Team captains will be elected at the end of the season.
There were no first-time starters for West Virginia in today’s game against Pitt. The Mountaineers have a total of 41 players with at least one game of starting experience, led by Rasheed Marshall’s 36 career starts.
Hikee Johnson’s 15-yard reception in the first quarter was the first touch by a WVU fullback this season, either receiving or rushing. The catch was the first of Johnson’s career.
Jason Colson’s six-yard rushing touchdown in the first quarter was his sixth of the season and ninth of his career. It marks the fourth time this season Colson has scored a rushing touchdown for the first score of the game (Connecticut, James Madison, East Carolina and Pitt).
The extra point by Brad Cooper on Colson’s touchdown tied the school record for consecutive extra points made in a season (43-for-43), tying Jay Taylor who was 43-for-43 in 1997.
With a 10-0 lead after 15 minutes, West Virginia outscored its opponents 97-30 after the first quarter this season.
With Pitt not scoring in the first quarter, it marked the second time this season the Panthers have been shutout in the first quarter. The other was Boston College.
Lawrence Audena’s interception in the second quarter was his first of the season and third of his career. The interception was the 14th by the Mountaineers this year. Audena becomes the 10th different Mountaineer to pick off a pass this season.
Adam Jones moved into second place all-time in career kickoff yardage at WVU, passing Willie Drewrey (1981-84), who had 1,329 career kickoff yards. Shawn Terry (1999-2001) is WVU’s all-time leader with 1,747 career kickoff yards.
Pernell Williams’ 19-yard gain in the second quarter was a career long.
Andy Good’s 31-yard field goal in the third quarter was his first career kick.
Jason Hardee registered his eighth career sack in the third quarter, tying him with Adam Lehnortt for most sacks by an active WVU player.
