MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University senior Alison Zemanski became the first volleyball player in school history to earn all-BIG EAST recognition when she was named second team all-conference at the pre-championship banquet on Friday, Nov. 19, in Pittsburgh.
Zemanski, a native of Perrysburg, Ohio, was the first Mountaineer to earn a conference honor since Megan Porter was named to the all-rookie team in 1996.
The senior middle blocker finished the season with 347 kills and an attack percentage of .305. She recorded 27 service aces, 80 digs and 159 blocks. Zemanski’s kill total was the second highest on the team while her attack percentage and block total were tops for the squad.
Zemanski’s 159 blocks were the most by any player in the BIG EAST this season while her 1.46 blocks per game average was the conference’s second best behind Lauren Brewster of Notre Dame (1.47).
Zemanski experienced a record-setting season in her final year as a Mountaineer. Her 159 blocks tie Jen McCuen (1991) for the fourth-most blocks in one season in school history. Zemanski’s .305 hitting percentage is the eighth-highest percentage by a Mountaineer in a single season.
The BIG EAST academic all-star finished her career with 954 kills and 402 blocks. Her kill total is just short of the school’s top ten list while her block sum puts her in sixth place on the university’s block list behind Lisa Scott (413).
Zemanski led West Virginia to an 18-13 record this season, its highest win total since 1991 when it finished the year with a mark of 26-11.
